#40 - May 29th -June 1st

May 29th

This morning again is misty and dull. We sure could use an ABD as the days have been overcast and dreary.  Our destination today will be Manasquan. It is the Northern most inlet in New Jersey that is navigable. We are going to to the inside run on this leg.

This marina? turned out to be a bust! No Laundry, no wifi,
No showers (the Harbor master? couldnt find the keys to
the Shower and bathrooms.) We should have anchored.

Horatio has won Bob over! He is snuggled up
against him because it is just a little choppy.
Bob says, "He is going to ruin my Image!"
We begin our journey wiggling through numerous twists and turns.  I'm concentrating on not running aground. but we do anyway!! two sets of eyes and we missed a pair of buoys. Fortunately, it is rising tide. Frustrated with myself, we manage to get off and on our way after an hour.

As we were leaving we passed the Barnaget Inlet I described yesterday. If you can enlarge, take a look at these two pics. Imagine how this would be if it was a storm situation.

Bob has been an invaluable navigator and computer tech. He has helped me with a few issues and explained even more. We do route planning for the next day after supper.

Our proposed marina, Captain Bill's, informed us the seas were really creating a lot of action in their marina. They are located just around the corner from the Manasquan Inlet and the wind and surf were kicking up.  And the Inlet we want to exit tomorrow.  We picked Hoffman's Marina about a mile and half inland. We are right on the T-dock along with 3 or 4 other loopers, sailboats; they really weren't interested in us.
A little walking was called for so off to find supper. Wanted to go to the Sand Bar but you couldn't hear yourself, let alone anyone else! Turned out the meal was great but it also was very loud. Should have gotten takeout!

May 30th

Here we go again! No rain but overcast and chilly. The forecast was good - nothing scary - but there were 3 foot swells. Higher tomorrow.  And, again, we are fortunate. the combination of a Northerly set to the tide and the SE wind we were flying.  49 miles in 5 1/2 hours.  Simpatico gave us a very smooth ride  also.
We enter the New York Harbor around 10:30, At the Veranzzano Bridge we meet first a destroyer escort, then the aircraft carrier. Nope didn't get her name, Sorry. There were police boats and coast guard buzzing all around the carrier.  One police boat came over to us and motioned to get out of the way.

And then - - out of the mist - - New York City

Our departure this morning was at 0730. Since the going was good we kept passing up our list of stops due to being so early in the day. Sandy Hook, Great Kills Harbor, Anchorage at Ellis Island.
So we chose 79th Street Boat Basin.

There she is! It is always a thrill to see this great monument! Ellis Island is where millions of immigrants entered our country, were processed and went on to greater lives and contributing to making this country great.

I couldn't convince Bob to get in the dinghy and take a picture of Simpatico in front of Lady Liberty. So, this is the next best. I am so glad to be in New York and have, to me, the most troublesome part of the trip behind me, the Delaware Bay and the NJ Coast.

Again we made the trip in record time, I love this little vessel.  The 79th Street Basin is at the foot of 79th Street in New York. two blocks up is Broadway and accessibility to all of New York is right there.  We were tied up at 1430 and raining a little.  Bob's son and wife live here in New York and he and Nancy are going to visit with them after Bob finishes his tenure on Simpatico.  This evening Bob treated me to a wonderful Italian dinner at the quaint authentic restaurant, Coppola.  Delicious! I had Pasta al Carbonara!  As good as La Ruota in Milano, those many years ago.
Bill and I and Olivia had been here at 79th in 2008 on our return from exploring Nova Scotia and Newfoundland. Terri came up from Washington and spent a few days on board with us as we explored and toured New York. Olivia was so excited to be here! and more excited to see the play "Wicked". Olivia bought a new dress, shoes and felt like a "princess"! Good memories! Oh yes, and we met Rod Stewart and the girls got their picture taken with him.

May 31st

Today I am kind of excited to travel to Half Moon Bay Marina where I have a reservation to keep the boat there for a few days while I fly home for my youngest Granddaughters graduation. Sort of the last day of the first part of the Journey. It will be Bob's last day on Simpatico also.

We did a leisurely  start today, 2 cups of coffee instead of one, breakfast casserole and melon. Only 30 miles to go up the river and the going was flat. Horatio was the happiest crew!

The new Tappan Zee Bridge is under construction to replace the old steel girder 4-lane. What an amazing undertaking.

I caught Bob playing with Horatio (in his crate). He is really such a softee. I think he really took a shining to Horatio!

Celebrating a well run leg of the trip.  "More Rum!"

June 1st

There goes my crew! I am so thankful for all of Bob's help and expertise.. He had many good ideas and kept me thinking, helped with all the boat chores and cooked some great Breakfasts. Bob's wife, Nancy is in New York and they are going to spend some time with their Son and wife before returning to Wilmington. Maybe I can get them both to join me for a bit sometime.

Half Moon Bay Marina on the shore of the Hudson River,
the sun is shining and the hills around are beautiful
I am now alone for the first time since leaving Cape Canaveral in April. I will prepare the boat for leaving her for a few days. It's been better than I had imagined it would be.  My crews have been awesome and fun. I'll fly to Michigan on the 3rd, On my return June 8th I'll meet my Grandsons Conor and Aidan at Grand Central Station and we will continue the Journey up the Hudson and Erie Canal to Brewerton NY.
Just seems like someone is missing. . . . .
